Prof. Joseph Klafter describes higher education as "stable and strong"
In an exclusive August 18, 2010, interview with Israel's Haaretz newspaper, Tel Aviv University President Prof. Joseph Klafter contributed to the ongoing national conversation about academic values in Israel, expressing confidence in the stability and strength of higher education in Israel and stressing the value of academic freedom of speech as a bulwark of a healthy higher education system.
"Only through maintaining a fruitful environment for discourse will it be possible to raise generations of citizens with awareness of the basic democratic and liberal values," Prof. Klafter told the newspaper. He also addressed the relationship of government funding and academic principles, and described his recent conversations with Israel's Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar.
