When It Rains, It Pours!

Stormwater runoff is drowning Miami with problems. Is there any turning back? You tell us!

Calling TAU students! LocalTAU and the City of Miami Beach invite you to propose a solution! The authors of the three best ideas will get a free trip to Miami Beach next March to present their proposals — and the best idea gets $20,000 to start their research!

PITCH COMPETITION TOPIC 2018-2019
In subtropical South Florida, the Everglades and the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve play a key role in shaping the urban environment. In Miami, the Everglades protect the natural aquifer that supplies fresh water to the 2.8 million people living in Miami-Dade County. Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve is integrated into the community's way of life, it provides nursery grounds and vital habitat to marine animals and recreational benefits to Miami's residents and visitors. Stormwater runoff throughout Miami-Dade County is discharged into Biscayne Bay. In order to better protect this natural resource, Miami is looking for solutions to provide higher levels of stormwater treatment that is cost effective, space conscious (there is little of it), and energy efficient (sustainable).

How can we treat stormwater runoff in a way that is sustainable (low-energy use), as well as cost effective in a dense urban city adjacent to a sensitive aquatic ecosystem?
