From Tel Aviv to Sarasota — A Trip Back In Time

More than 25 friends gathered at the beautiful home of Ina Schnell and Dr. Arthur Ancowitz in Long Boat Key on Tuesday evening, October 6, to hear Professor Hana Wirth-Nesher speak on Yiddish in American Literature. Her topic, "Speaking Jewish, Writing English," resonated with many of the guests who traveled back in time to the fondest of their childhood memories.

Host Ina Schnell introduced Professor Wirth-Nesher and welcomed her to the community with open arms. Dr. Ancowitz set the tone for the evening by opening the lecture with a performance of two Yiddish songs that were particularly meaningful to him. He shared stories about his family and his trips to the Yiddish theatre in New York City. Professor Wirth-Nesher was thrilled to share her own childhood experiences and spoke about how they helped shape her academic and career choices.

The lecture highlighted three generations of American writers who brought their Yiddish influence into their celebrated works of American literature.

In attendance were Linda and Elli Streit of the TAU Board of Governors. Elli closed the program speaking about Tel Aviv University, the 30,000 students they serve every year, and TAU's focus on remaining the number one interdisciplinary university in Israel. The evening was a wonderful way to reminisce about the past and take pride in the present and the future.
