Tel Aviv University (TAU) has been ranked first among Israeli universities in the prestigious National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU) for 2026. Analysis of this ranking, which focuses on research excellence, shows that TAU has risen by seven places compared to last year in the international ranking, while maintaining its position as Israel’s leading university.

The Taiwan Ranking is considered one of the leading international measures for evaluating research quality at universities. Unlike other rankings, it is based exclusively on research performance and does not include indicators of teaching quality or reputation surveys. The ranking evaluates institutions’ research productivity, research impact through citation data, and research excellence based on indicators such as the h-index, the number of papers ranked among the top 10% in their field, and the number of publications in high-impact journals.

In the overall ranking of Israeli universities, TAU is ranked first (206th worldwide), followed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (263), the Weizmann Institute of Science (310), the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (382), Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (ranked in the 501–550 group), Bar-Ilan University (801–850), and the University of Haifa (851–900).

Alongside its rise in the overall ranking, TAU also registered notable achievements in discipline-based rankings: 102nd worldwide and first in Israel in Medicine, as well as first in Israel in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Agriculture. The Technion ranked first in Israel in Engineering.

The NTU Ranking, published annually, is based on three main components: research productivity (25%), research impact through citations (35%), and research excellence (40%), measured using a range of standard bibliometric indicators.
